KING MIDAS AND HIS GOLDEN TOUCH
Once there was a king called Midas. He was very rich. Rich people are never satisfied. They want more and more. The more they have, the more they want. The king was not satisfied. He thought, if he had the golden touch, he would be the happiest.man. A wise god granted his wish promptly. That afternoon Midas was sitting near an apple tree in the palace orchard. A ripe apple fell from the tree in his front. He picked it up. It became gold. Midas realized that he had been gifted with the golden touch. He was overwhelmed with joy. He entered the palace with an ecstasy of joy. His little daughter, Marigold, came running to her father. Midas took her up in his arms with an intensity of glee. But alas! There was a statue of gold in his lap. The princess became all gold. The king was at his wit's end. A terrible shock rent his heart. The princess was no more that Marigold. Now he needed Marigold and not gold. He was shedding bitter tears. He realized his mistake and tried to rectify himself. Suddenly his face beamed up. He remembered the wise god. He prayed to him to take away the golden touch. The wise god heard the king's prayer and lifted from him the golden touch. Midas felt profoundly grateful. He took the princess again into his lap. She became Marigold. Midas' joys then knew no bounds. He grew wiser and gave up his, greed.
রাজা মিডাস ও তার সোনালি স্পর্শ
মিডাস নামে এক রাজা ছিলেন। তিনি খুব ধনী ছিলেন। ধনী লোকেরা কখনই সন্তুষ্ট হয় না। তারা আরও বেশি কিছু চায়। তাদের যত বেশি আছে, তত বেশি তারা চায়। রাজা সন্তুষ্ট হননি। সে ভেবেছিল, যদি তার সোনার ছোঁয়া থাকে তবে সে সবচেয়ে সুখী হবে, ইশ্বর তাঁর ইচ্ছা তত্ক্ষণাত মঞ্জুর করলেন। সেই বিকেলে মিদাস প্রাসাদের বাগানে একটি আপেল গাছের কাছে বসে ছিল। একটা পাকা আপেল তার সামনের গাছ থেকে পড়ে গেল। ওটা তুলে নিল। এটি সোনার হয়ে গেল। মিডাস বুঝতে পেরেছিল যে তাকে সোনার ছোঁয়া দেওয়া হয়েছে। সে আনন্দে অভিভূত হয়েছিল। তিনি আনন্দের সাথে এক প্রাসাদে প্রবেশ করলেন। তার ছোট মেয়ে মেরিগোল্ড ছুটে এসে বাবার কাছে এসেছিল। মিডাস তাকে নিয়ে গেল তার মধ্যে উল্লাস একটি তীব্রতা সঙ্গে বাহু। কিন্তু হায়! তাঁর কোলে সোনার একটি মূর্তি ছিল। রাজকন্যা হয়ে গেল সব সোনা। রাজা তার বুদ্ধি শেষ ছিল। এক ভয়াবহ ধাক্কা তার হৃদয়কে ভেঙে দিয়েছে। রাজকন্যা ছিল আর যে মেরিগোল্ড। এখন তার দরকার ছিল মেরিগোল্ড এবং না সোনার। সে তিক্ত অশ্রু বয়ে যাচ্ছিল। সে নিজের ভুল বুঝতে পেরে নিজেকে সংশোধন করার চেষ্টা করেছিল। হঠাৎ তার মুখ ভেসে উঠল। তিনি জ্ঞানী দেবতার কথা স্মরণ করলেন। তিনি তাঁর কাছে সোনার স্পর্শ সরিয়ে নিতে প্রার্থনা করলেন। জ্ঞানী ইশ্বর রাজার প্রার্থনা শুনে তাঁর কাছ থেকে সোনার স্পর্শ তুলে নিলেন। মিদাস গভীরভাবে কৃতজ্ঞতা অনুভব করলেন। সে আবার রাজকন্যাকে কোলে নিয়ে গেল। সে মেরিগোল্ড হয়ে গেল। মিডাসের আনন্দ তখন কোন সীমা জানত না। সে বুদ্ধিমান হয়ে ওঠে এবং তার, লোভ ছেড়ে দিয়েছেন।
